Anime Overlord Wiki

Complete guide to the Overlord anime series — watch order, characters, lore, and everything in between

Anime Overlord Watch Order

Start with all four TV seasons, then place The Sacred Kingdom between Season 4 Episodes 7 and 8. The two 2017 recap films are optional and can be skipped without missing any new story.

1

Overlord Season 1 — Start Here

Introduces Momonga, Nazarick, Carne Village, the Momon identity, and the Shalltear conflict. 13 episodes, aired July–September 2015.

2

Overlord: The Undead King (Optional Recap)

A theatrical recap of the first part of Season 1. Watch only if you want the movie format. Not a replacement for the full series.

3

Overlord: The Dark Warrior (Optional Recap)

Second recap film covering Season 1 material. Best treated as bonus viewing after you already know the core story.

4

Overlord II — Continue the Story

The Lizardmen campaign, Sebas in the capital, and the growing clash between Nazarick and the human world. Episodes 14–26.

5

Overlord III — Empire and War

Covers the Empire alliance, Workers invasion, and the decisive battle at Katze Plains. Episodes 27–39, aired July–October 2018.

6

Overlord IV Episodes 1–7 — Before the Movie

Watch the Sorcerous Nation opening arc and Dwarven Kingdom material first. Stop after episode 7 (episode 46 overall) to place the movie correctly.

7

Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom — Canon Movie

This is a canon story film, not a recap. It adapts the Holy Kingdom arc and fits chronologically between Overlord IV Episode 7 and Episode 8. Released September 2024, streaming on Crunchyroll from April 2025.

8

Overlord IV Episodes 8–13 — Finish Season 4

Return to the TV run for the Re-Estize Kingdom endgame and the closing events of Season 4. Episodes 47–52.

Watch Order Tips

  • The two 2017 films (The Undead King, The Dark Warrior) only recap Season 1 — skip them if you want pure story progress.
  • The Sacred Kingdom is a canon story film, not a recap — it counts as new content and should be watched in its correct chronological position.
  • If you finish Season 4 first, you can still watch The Sacred Kingdom after — just note you will see Ainz's motivation slightly out of order.
  • All four TV seasons and The Sacred Kingdom are available on Crunchyroll.

Anime Overlord Main Characters

These are the core Nazarick members, major kingdom figures, and movie cast that appear most often in searches. Knowing which faction each character belongs to makes the story arcs far easier to follow.

Ainz Ooal Gown

Formerly Momonga, now ruler of the Sorcerer Kingdom. Every major political and military arc centers on his decisions and strategy.

Albedo

Guardian Overseer and Ainz's chief administrator. She manages Nazarick's internal command structure and is fiercely loyal to Ainz.

Demiurge

Floor Guardian of the seventh floor and Nazarick's strategic mastermind. A hidden force behind many of the series' largest plot movements.

Guardian of the first to third floors. She drives one of the anime's most memorable early conflicts and remains one of Nazarick's strongest fighters.

Neia Baraja

Squire and core viewpoint character in The Sacred Kingdom film. One of the most searched movie-era characters due to her pivotal role.

Remedios Custodio

Grandmaster of the Holy Kingdom Paladin Order. She leads the desperate resistance against Jaldabaoth in The Sacred Kingdom film.

Princess of Re-Estize whose hidden intelligence and agenda become increasingly important in later political arcs, especially around the kingdom's fall.

Anime Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom Guide

The Sacred Kingdom is the only Overlord film that tells a major new canon story instead of recapping TV material. It expands the world beyond Nazarick and Re-Estize by focusing on the Holy Kingdom under siege.

Place this film after Overlord IV Episode 7 and before Episode 8 for chronological order. It released in Japan on September 20, 2024 and began streaming on Crunchyroll in April 2025.

Main Setup

Story overview

The Roble Holy Kingdom faces collapse from Jaldabaoth and a demi-human alliance. Remedios Custodio and Neia Baraja travel to request help from Ainz and the Sorcerer Kingdom.

Neia Baraja (viewpoint character), Remedios Custodio (paladin leader), Calca Bessarez (Holy Queen), Kelart Custodio (high priestess), and CZ2128 Delta with an expanded role.

Why It Matters

Story significance

It gives the Holy Kingdom arc its own full adaptation and adds context to Ainz's reach beyond Re-Estize, making it essential for post-Season-4 watch guidance seekers.

Key Facts

  • This film is a canon story, not a recap — it is essential for Holy Kingdom arc fans.
  • Can also be watched after the full series as a standalone conclusion to the Holy Kingdom story.
  • Streaming on Crunchyroll alongside the main TV series.
  • Neia Baraja becomes one of the fan-favorite characters introduced in the film era.

Anime Overlord: Ainz Ooal Gown

Ainz Ooal Gown is the face of Overlord — former player Momonga, now the Sorcerer King of Nazarick. His identity, titles, magic, and story arc across the anime and The Sacred Kingdom film define every major event in the series.

Core Identity

Formerly Momonga, a dedicated YGGDRASIL player known as Suzuki Satoru in the real world. He remains logged in as servers shut down and awakens in the New World as the undead Overlord Ainz Ooal Gown.

Titles and Public Personas

Ainz carries multiple titles: Supreme One, Sorcerer King, King of Darkness, and Momon the Dark Hero. Each persona serves a distinct political or strategic role across different arcs.

Race and On-Screen Presence

He appears as an undead Overlord — a skeletal figure in a black academic robe with gold and violet trim and a floating red orb beneath his ribs. His former race was human.

Magic Profile

Specialized in necromancy and instant-death magic with over 700 spells available. Super-tier abilities include Fallen Down and Iä Shub-Niggurath, and he exploits time-stop timing for devastating combinations.

Revered as the highest of the Forty-One Supreme Beings by Nazarick's NPCs. Outside, he becomes the Sorcerer King and a major political force whose influence reshapes the entire New World.

Begins as the last player at YGGDRASIL's shutdown, establishes the Sorcerer Kingdom from Nazarick, and becomes a world-shaping power in the Holy Kingdom arc covered in The Sacred Kingdom film.

Anime Overlord: Inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick

The Great Tomb of Nazarick is the power center of Overlord. It functions as Ainz's home base, war room, political court, prison network, and final line of defense — understanding its structure makes the entire franchise much easier to follow.

Fortress Overview

Originally a high-level dungeon in YGGDRASIL, Nazarick was conquered and rebuilt by Ainz Ooal Gown. After reconstruction it expanded to more than ten floors with layered defenses, teleport gates, and custom NPC infrastructure. It survived the famous 1,500-man assault without the attackers breaching the deepest defenses.

Leadership and Command

Nazarick runs on a strict top-down command structure. Ainz Ooal Gown issues all final strategic decisions. Albedo serves as Overseer Guardian and acts as the overall commander of the Floor Guardians. Each Floor Guardian controls a major defense domain and commands powerful subordinates within that space.

1st–3rd Floors: Grave / Catacombs (Guardian: Shalltear). 4th Floor: Underground Lake (Gargantua). 5th Floor: Glacier (Cocytus). 6th Floor: Jungle (Aura and Mare). 7th Floor: Lava (Demiurge). 8th Floor: Wilderness (Victim — final defense line). 9th Floor: Royal Suite with service facilities. 10th Floor: Throne Room — Ainz's command chamber. Treasury: a separate spatial vault accessed via the Rings of Ainz Ooal Gown.

Key Military and Support Groups

Beyond the Floor Guardians, Nazarick operates through elite units and specialized NPCs. The Pleiades are Nazarick's battle maids and one of its best-known elite service and combat groups. The 8th Floor Hierarchy and Aureole Omega represent Nazarick's deepest reserve power. Area Guardians such as Kyouhukou and Neuronist Painkill reinforce individual zones.

The Throne Room is where Ainz gathers the guardians, assigns missions, monitors threats, and announces policy. Nazarick functions as home, government center, prison system, laboratory, and symbol of overwhelming power. Most of the series' turning points begin with decisions made inside Nazarick, even when the action happens far away.

Anime Overlord Light Novel Reading Order Guide

The Overlord light novels currently have 16 released volumes. The best reading path depends on whether you want the complete experience, the fastest continuation after the anime, or a clean anime-to-novel bridge that includes the movie material.

The Overlord anime is a faithful story path version of the novels, but it is also a compressed one. The novels carry much more internal monologue, lore, and faction-level context. This guide helps viewers see what was adapted, what was compressed, and where reading adds the most value.

Anime Overlord Major Japanese and English Voice Cast

Overlord has kept a recognizable core cast across its main anime run, while The Sacred Kingdom added several important Holy Kingdom roles. This cast guide combines the TV anime lineup with the key Sacred Kingdom additions, organized for quick character-to-actor lookups.

Main series and The Sacred Kingdom. Hara's performance balances Albedo's fierce loyalty as Overseer Guardian, administrative precision, and moments of comedic intensity.
